Beyond the Canvas: AI-Enhanced Conceptual Thinking in Design Pedagogy

As part of the "Design Talk" event series organized by the Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department at Antalya Bilim University, a session was held on February 13, 2025, featuring Asst. Prof. Dr. Poupak PARVARESH. This session was conducted within the scope of the IAED 3002 Interior Design Studio VI course, led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Yaren ŞEKERCİ, and Lec. Gamze AKYOL provided significant insights for students.

Moderated by Research Assistant Müge DEVELİER, the event, titled "Beyond the Canvas: AI-Enhanced Conceptual Thinking in Design Pedagogy," explored the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in design education and methods for enhancing conceptual thinking. The discussion inspired students on how AI-assisted design processes could be utilized more effectively. Additionally, by engaging with current technologies, students gained skills tailored to industry demands.

Throughout the event, in-depth discussions were held on the integration of AI technologies into design education and how these technologies contribute to conceptual thinking. The session emphasized AI as a tool in design processes, particularly in concept development, idea generation, and accelerating the design workflow.

The event also contributed to students' conceptual thinking skills. AI-supported design tools enabled them to visualize their ideas more rapidly and effectively, fostering a more open and creative approach in the design process. Within the IAED 3002 course project, students were encouraged to find innovative and creative solutions to challenges encountered in their design processes. In this context, the event focused on integrating AI technologies into design education and how these tools could enhance conceptual thinking.

By utilizing AI-powered tools, students had the opportunity to analyze data, expedite design concepts, and present their projects more effectively. The event not only provided technical knowledge but also offered valuable experience in professional practice and professionalism. Topics such as overcoming design challenges, analyzing client needs, and effective project presentation techniques were also discussed.

We extend our gratitude to Asst. Prof. Dr. Poupak PARVARESH for sharing her valuable insights in this enlightening discussion.
