On October 3, 2024, as part of the IAED 3002 Space Design Studio VI course led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Yaren ŞEKERCİ and Research Assistant Müge DEVELİER, a technical trip was organized to Konyaaltı Animal Hospital to learn about interior design and workflow for veterinary clinic design. This technical trip provided students with the opportunity to explore important elements to consider in the design of animal hospitals on-site. During the visit, Veterinarian Çağdaş TEKMAN shared comprehensive information about the operation of a veterinary clinic. The students had the chance to learn about the experience clients and their pets undergo from the moment they arrive at the hospital. Elements such as waiting areas, examination rooms, and patient intake processes highlighted their significance in terms of design.
The students gained a deep understanding of not only the ergonomics needed to make animals comfortable but also the design criteria that provide psychological comfort. The functionality of veterinary medicine emerged as one of the most critical aspects of space design. Key issues to consider in the design of examination areas were presented, offering insights into how spaces should be designed for both functionality and user experience. The spatial organization of the office level, surgical-examination floors, patient reception area, and isolation areas was discussed in detail.
During the trip, spatial and design-related problems experienced in the existing environment were also conveyed. The students became aware of how these issues should be considered in the design process. Additionally, they gained awareness of the origins and purposes of laws, regulations, and standards.
The trip demonstrated how critical interior design is not only for visual aesthetics but also for functionality and user experience. Through this experience, students acquired the opportunity to approach design strategies for animal health more consciously in their future projects. This technical trip provided a rich contribution to architectural education, allowing students to broaden their professional perspectives.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Veterinarian Çağdaş TEKMAN and the team at Konyaaltı Animal Hospital for generously sharing their valuable insights with us.
